Paintings and Drawings by Linda JamesChamber Gallery Rangiora 11 June - 13 July 2017
141 Percival Street, Rangiora, New Zealand 7400
Artist's Statement
Using the craft of representational drawing and painting, this series of portraits appropriates people from populist media, and combines them with commonly used platitudes to create a montage.
The works explore how traditional notions of identity and authenticity are destabilized and trivialized in an environment where the commerce in images and words (via television, the internet, and advertising) has reached saturation point.
James has a preoccupation with our experience of reality as a media construct and presents her 'solution'; to re-present these fleeting images as carefully considered paintings in the reflective space of the art gallery.
The exhibition generates interest in issues such as identity and place, the contemporary culture of the image, and the shifting positionalities of the image, the words, the viewer and the world.
